The "Guru Mentality" is Toxic: Why We Need to Stop Idolizing Wellness Leaders

Let's be completely honest for a second. When you are exhausted and just trying to navigate your own healing, it is incredibly tempting to look at the online wellness space and assume the people leading it have everything perfectly figured out. We put these coaches, influencers, and spiritual leaders on massive pedestals, hoping they hold the secret to fixing our lives. But behind the serene aesthetics and high vibes, there is a messy reality we really need to talk about: the trap of the "guru mentality."

I was scrolling through my feed the other day when a post literally made me stop and stare. A popular holistic practitioner and influencer was publicly bashing her ex-girlfriend. The kicker? Her ex is also a massively influential holistic psychologist and thought leader online. The post was a bold, unfiltered declaration about no longer staying quiet about their personal drama and their toxic relationship.

But what really struck me wasn't just the airing of dirty laundry. It was the complete lack of accountability. There was zero acknowledgment of her own part in the relationship breakdown; it was just pure, one-sided bashing.

And honestly, the comments section was just as alarming. Her followers were immediately jumping to her defense, blindly taking her side without a second thought. Very few paused to ask questions. Very few did their own research or stopped to consider that there are two sides to every story. They just instantly went to bat for their guru.

Seeing this messy reality play out on a public platform really got me thinking. It made me question the integrity of the spiritual leaders and online practitioners people follow so blindly. More importantly, it highlighted the dangerous guru syndrome so many of us project onto the people leading the healing industry.

It made me step back and ask: Since when did people stop being human and become gurus?

My Own Wake-Up Call

I am not just calling this out from the sidelines. I know exactly how this trap works because I fell right into it myself.

When I first began my own healing journey, I was deep in this exact guru mentality. I idolized the leaders and coaches I found online. I looked at them and genuinely believed they were somehow "better" than me. I put them on massive pedestals and basically became a devoted follower of their "community". I hung onto their every word, assuming they had the perfect roadmap to healing and that if I just followed their rules, I would be fixed.

But then one day, I woke up. I got a peek behind the curtain and saw all the messy, behind-the-scenes details of the community. I saw the human flaws, the unchecked egos, and the reality they worked so hard to hide from their followers. I started questioning their status quo and got major backlash. It was a harsh reality check, but it was the exact wake-up call I needed to snap out of the illusion.

The Business of Selling "Perfect Vibes"

Let’s look at the bigger picture for a second. When people step into the online wellness space, they are usually at the end of their rope. They are burned out, stressed, and quietly desperate for some relief.

When people are that vulnerable, it is way too easy to look at a wellness leader and see a savior instead of a salesperson. Keep in mind, the wellness industry is a multi-trillion-dollar business. Social media algorithms are literally designed to sniff out our insecurities and feed us beautifully packaged solutions.

People look at an influencer's glowing skin, their perfectly worded boundaries, and their serene meditation spaces, and they buy into the illusion. They assume this person has completely bypassed the messy, painful reality of being human. But as someone who actually works in this industry, let me give you a behind the scenes tip. You cannot believe everything you see online. That highly curated, 60 second Reel is a marketing tool, not a documentary.

Professionalism vs. Fake Perfection: A Coach’s Perspective

Full disclosure: I am an online coach myself. Because of my own experience getting caught up in that guru illusion, I try to be as authentic as possible in my own business. You will not find a perfectly polished Instagram account or flawless, highly produced Reels on my page. I try to keep things as real as possible while still maintaining my professionalism.

Here is the truth. Most of us in this industry don’t share our personal drama, one-sided rants, messy breakups, or bad days on our business pages. But that isn’t because we don’t have them; it’s because it’s unprofessional. Keeping your dirty laundry off your business account is just standard boundary-setting.

The problem is when that professional boundary gets misinterpreted by the audience as spiritual perfection. And it's even worse when leaders lean into that misconception to sell the illusion that they are flawless. Not airing your personal drama is professional. Pretending you don't have any personal drama because you are just so spiritually evolved is a lie.

Newsflash: Wellness Leaders are Human

It completely makes sense why people put spiritual and wellness leaders on pedestals. Everyone wants a shortcut to peace, and the person with the perfect aesthetic looks like the safest bet. But let’s be real. The spiritual and wellness industry is made up of human beings.

A brilliant holistic psychologist can still end up in a toxic relationship dynamic. A celebrated spiritual guide might be battling a massive ego behind closed doors. A renowned wellness leader might privately struggle with deep insecurities, refuse to take accountability for their actions, or make terrible life choices.

Knowing all the right therapy buzzwords does not magically exempt someone from acting out their own trauma.

Even those who claim to have it all together absolutely do not. Every single leader, coach, and guide has off days. When we demand spiritual perfection from them, we force them into an exhausting performance and set ourselves up for a massive letdown.

And look, I need to make a really clear distinction here. There is a massive difference between a coach having a messy human moment, like a bad breakup, and the actual predatory stuff that happens in this industry. We’ve all heard the stories about high-profile spiritual leaders getting away with absolute horrors. Those aren't just off days. That kind of behavior is way beyond just being a flawed human. But here is the terrifying part. This whole guru mentality is exactly what protects them. When we blindly worship these leaders and never question them, we hand them the power to get away with the unthinkable.

How to Drop the Guru Mentality

Healing isn't a quick fix or a final destination. It is a messy journey that takes years, and sometimes lifetimes. Don't get me wrong, it is perfectly healthy and often necessary to lean on coaches, therapists, and healers as guides along the way. We absolutely need them sometimes! But there is a huge difference between leaning on a guide for support and expecting a flawless savior to fix you. If we want to stay grounded in reality, we have to stop handing over our own self-trust to people who are just as human as we are. Breaking the guru mentality takes conscious effort.

Before we get into the steps, please give yourself some grace. If you are reading this and realizing you've been blindly following an illusion, do not feel ashamed. Remember, this industry is literally designed to prey on us when we are at our most vulnerable. It happens to the best of us.

Here is how you can start taking these leaders off their pedestals today:

  • Use your discernment: Discernment is your best tool in the wellness space. Instead of blindly agreeing with a leader (like those followers in the comments section), pause and critically evaluate what you're consuming. Ask yourself if this actually aligns with your values. Is this person backing up their high vibes with actual accountability? Real accountability looks like a leader who can openly say they messed up, who apologizes without getting defensive, and who shares their current struggles instead of just the perfectly packaged stories of traumas they've already healed.

  • Remember they are human: Whenever you find yourself idolizing a leader, remind yourself that they wake up with bad breath, get annoyed in traffic, have off days, and sometimes make incredibly messy choices. They are not deities. They are just people.

  • Take what resonates and leave the rest: You can learn amazing tools from a coach without needing them to be a perfect angel in their personal life. Extract the wisdom that actually serves your growth, and drop the drama, dogma, or personality cults that don't.

  • Trust your gut over their marketing: Having it all together is often just a highly profitable brand identity. If something a leader says or does feels off, out of alignment, or lacking accountability, trust your intuition.

  • Reclaim your inner authority: Look at it this way. The best coaches aren't trying to create dependent followers. They are trying to teach you how to trust yourself again. Use their tools, but remember that you are the ultimate authority on your own life and healing.

When we accept that our spiritual guides and wellness leaders are going to make mistakes, dodge accountability sometimes, have messy breakups, and stumble, we actually reclaim our own power. We stop looking outside ourselves for a quick fix, and we start stepping into our own autonomy. We finally realize that the ultimate guru we were desperately searching for online was inside us all along.
